Ordering Recommendation

Preferred testing for herpes simplex virus (HSV) when exposure to HSV is suspected.

May be useful in identifying a subclinical HSV infection. If results are positive for HSV type 1/2 combined antibodies but negative for both type-specific antibodies, follow-up testing at least one month later is recommended because glycoprotein antibodies may require 3-6 months to form; refer to Herpes Simplex Type 1 and Type 2 Glycoprotein G-Specific Antibodies, IgG by CIA (0051152).

Serum separator tube.

Specimen Preparation

Transfer 1 mL serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL) Parallel testing is preferred and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of acute specimens. Mark specimens plainly as "acute" or "convalescent."

Storage/Transport Temperature

Refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions

Plasma or urine. Contaminated, heat-inactivated, hemolyzed, or severely lipemic specimens.
